Bugs is part of the Sidewalk Science series.

Bugs: Explorations in Life Science features six neighborhood kids -- Ben, Kevin, Kate, Lee, Nora, and Susan -- and their pets. The action in Bugs takes place right after Nora moves on to the block with her cat, Buzzy. Nora, who is a little bit nuts about insects, soon has the other kids caught up in her enthusiasm. The "sidewalk scientists" not only observe insects and learn about insect behavior but even imitate insects -- by building models and puppets, simulating sounds and making music.

After working with the materials in this program, students will be able to:

	Define insects and describe their most important characteristics.
	Describe the roles of insects in food webs and other natural processes.
	Identify the stages of complete and incomplete metamorphosis.
	Group insects by order, family, genus and species, using scientific names.
	Describe how entomology relates to other branches of life science.
	Identify some harmful insects and describe efforts to control them.
	Describe methods used by insects to communicate.
	Define social insects and give everyday examples.
	Describe caste and division of labor among honeybees, ants and other social insects.
	Define the scientific method and describe how entomologists apply it.

By using the materials in this program, teachers will be able to:

	Use learning teams and learning themes as strategies in working with the program (three to five students per computer).
	Track and monitor students' progress through the program.
