How long will the Typing Assessment take?
The typing assessment will present between 2 and 4 sets of numbers with most operations requiring 3 except for Multiplication 0-12 which requires 4 and Subtraction 0-9 which requires only 2. The assessment typing should be completed in a daily session.
How long will the Placement Quiz take?
The maximum number of sets that a student will receive in the initial placement quiz is 8 and this number is highly variable based on operation, fact range as well as student performance (accuracy and speed). The Placement Quiz usually takes 1 to 2 days.
Note: The Typing Assessment and the Placement Quiz usually take a total of 1 to 2 days.
I have a student who is an extremely slow typist. Can I help this student by taking the typing assessment for him/her?
A student should complete his/her own typing assessment; under no circumstances should a teacher or classmate take the typing assessment for someone. FASTT Math calculates fact fluency on initial typing time. (FASTT Math measures the difference between simply typing “12” and typing the response to “3x4.”) If the initial typing assessment is done by someone who is a faster typist than the individual using the program, the student will have a very fast typing baseline and will have a very difficult time demonstrating fluency.
How does a student move a fact from a Study Fact to a Focus Fact and then to a Fast Fact?
After the initial Placement Quiz a student will already have a baseline of Fast Facts (facts recalled .8 seconds or less plus typing time). These facts will remain fast facts throughout all of the sessions in the assigned operation.
Next a student will be presented several Study Facts which he/she must type from memory and then practice them through the expanding recall model. This will help the student develop quick recall of the fact. The goal for the student is to be able to recall these facts from memory in less than 1.25 seconds (this time is adjustable) which turns these Study Facts into Focus Facts. A student receives more practice during their fluency games on recently learned facts.
Finally, a student can turn their Focus Facts into Fast Facts during either a Mastery or New Level Challenge by responding to the presented facts in .8 seconds or less. It is only during these special sessions that a student will be able to turn Focus Facts into Fast Facts regardless as to how quickly they are able to answer these problems during the expanding recall practice and fluency games.

When will a student receive a Mastery Challenge?
A Mastery Challenge occurs after approximately 60 minutes of instructional time that includes the time from study, practice and review sessions plus the first practice game for each daily session .

When does a student complete an operation?
A student needs to complete a "Mastery Challenge" in order to change all of his/her Focus Facts into Fast Facts. When there are no more Study Facts to be introduced in the operation a Mastery session will occur after 30 minutes of instructional time that includes the time from Study, Practice and Review sessions plus the first practice game for each daily session. This time is counted from the last Mastery Session. When mastery of all facts is achieved there will be a notice for the teacher in the message center and a certificate can be printed.
Note: If a teacher would like to advance a student to the next operation before they have completed a final Mastery Challenge a generic mastery certificate for each operation is available below to download and print.
Addition Mastery, Subtraction Mastery, Multiplication Mastery, Division Mastery

I have a student who has received many review sessions and they seem to be doing quite well but the program is not letting them learn new facts.
Poor performance due to fatigue or boredom caused by excessive use of the games can be a factor in triggering Review Sessions for students who might actually already know the facts. (see “How many games should my students be playing?” below). We recommend that for those students who have had 3 or more review sessions that you unassign the operation and reassign them to the same operation. The student will be required to repeat the typing and placement quizzes but then they should be able to proceed from where they left off.

Do students spend exactly 10 minutes every day using the program?
In developing the program, we found that the average time it took students to get through an instructional session and 1-2 games is about 10 minutes. Some students will finish more quickly, while others might take closer to 15 minutes a day. When thinking about how to allocate time in your classroom, we suggest planning on 15 minutes per student, but this will be an upper limit in almost all cases. Most students will finish in about 10.
Note: If a student consistently takes more than 15 minutes then the number of problems per session can be reduced under settings in the FASTT Math Teacher Manager.

How many games should my students be playing?
Students should play about 1-2 games per daily session, and teachers should encourage students to respond quickly and accurately to the game questions. FASTT Math tracks performance in all sessions, including the games.
