What does the Retention Level measure?
The retention level indicates the percentage of already-mastered facts presented in the program, which were answered fluently. |
Why do I see sometimes see 0% under Retention Level?
You will see a 0% retention level if the current target Study Facts have not yet become Focus Facts. Once the current facts have turned into Focus Facts then the retention level will be updated to reflect the new retention level. |
What is Rate of Gain?
This indicates how many facts became Fast Facts per hour of instruction time spent in the software. |
Why don’t I see anything listed for Rate of Gain?
Rate of Gain is calculated after a Mastery session has occurred. A Mastery session occurs after about 60 minutes of instructional time and assesses students in all facts that are currently marked as Focus facts. |
Why don’t I always see the Current Study Facts (highlighted by a blue box) a student is working on?
This can occur if the last time the student logged in he/she played extra Fluency games. This appears in the report only and does not affect the facts which will be presented to the student in their next session. |
Why do I sometimes see Alert messages for a student and other times do not?
Alert messages appear on reports if the current date is selected and there is an alert indicator visible on the report (red triangle). |
Why is the Percentage of Optimal Use flagged (red triangle)?
The optimal usage for a student is daily so if this number falls below 59% it indicates that the student is using the software less than 3 days per week, on average. |
Why are there multiple logins listed for a student when the student only logged into the program once?
The program counts all new activities as logins, for example each additional Fluency Game counts as a new Login so for a study facts session with one additional Fluency game you would normally see 2 logins listed. This gives you an indication of the number of additional games that a student plays. Remember we recommend that students play only 1-2 games per day in order to maintain focus and that teachers encourage students to answer quickly and accurately. All in all, students should spend about 8-15 minutes total (including both instruction and practice) on the software per daily session. |
What does Session Time measure?
The Session Time is the amount of time the student spent finishing the assigned session for the day (this time includes instruction time and the first practice game played). This number will be flagged if it is less than 6 minutes or greater than 18 minutes. You have the ability to adjust the program settings for a particular student based on your observations of the student’s progress (see page 99 of the Teacher’s Guide). |
What is Extra Practice?
Extra Practice measures the time spent playing extra practice games. |
How much time does my student spend each day using the FASTT Math program?
The total time spent by a student includes the Session Time plus the Extra Practice. |
Why do I see only one bar listed in the Student Fluency Growth report?
This report displays a bar graph showing progress made by the student toward mastering all facts in the operation. The first bar displays the number of Fast Facts the student had at the end of the placement quiz. Other bars display the number of Fast and Focus Facts the student had on the date of a Mastery Challenge assessment. If the student has not taken a Mastery Challenge assessment in this operation yet, only one bar will appear. |
What does the FACT GROUP mean?
The number group shown is the lowest fact group where a student still has non-fluent facts. |
What is the RATE OF GAIN?
This indicates how many facts became Fast Facts per hour of instruction time spent in the software. |
Why don’t I see any number listed for RATE OF GAIN?
Rate of Gain is calculated after a Mastery session has occurred. |
Why do I see sometimes see 0% under Retention Level?
You will see a 0% retention level if the current target Study Facts have not yet become Focus Facts. Once the current facts have turned into Focus Facts then the retention level will be updated to reflect the new retention level.

What is the Average Session Time?
The average session time measures the average amount of time the student spends on the assigned session for the day that includes only the instructional portion of the session and not the practice game.
