Q: How can I install Decisions, Decisions Current Issues onto my Windows XP computer?
A:Although we do not officially recommend this program for Windows XP, it can be run successfully on the operating system, once you get past some initial hurdles. The good news is that the problem described in this FAQ has nothing to do with the program itself, but rather is involved with the design of its installation CD. Once the Decisions, Decisions Current Issues is installed it will not require the installation CD to run, so this will not be an ongoing irritation for you and your students. The obstacle that you will run into on Windows XP involves the CD's auto-launch behavior. The intended behavior when the CD is inserted into the CD drive is for its contents to be displayed in a window so that you can run setup and install the program. This does not work correctly on Windows XP. What you may see instead could be any of the following 3 things:
- An installer launches for Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- A message pops up saying that “Windows cannot find rs405eng.exe”.
- Nothing happens.
Typically at this point, many users will attempt to open the CD by double-clicking the CD's icon in My Computer but alas, this will trigger either behavior 1 or 2 above.
To get past this problem and get on with installing and using Decisions, Decisions Current Issues on Windows XP, do the following:
- To disable the auto-launch when you insert the CD hold down the left shift key for a good 8 seconds (or otherwise cancel the installer or message).
- Click Start then Run and, for the stand-alone version, type “ D:Setup ” and hit enter to begin the install (assuming “D” to be the letter of your CD-ROM drive). For the network version, simply type “ D: ” and hit enter to display the CD's contents. Follow the Network Installation Instructions in the Readme file to set up your network installation.
